So, you didn’t get much sleep last night? Me either. I laid in bed with my eyes shut but my brain wide open. Creating mental to-do lists, stressing about normal life things, and naturally stressing out about the fact that I wasn’t sleeping.

Anyone else do that? If there’s one thing that makes it hard for me to sleep, it’s thinking about how fucking hard sleeping is.

If you’re lying in bed right now trying to figure out how the hell you’re going to make it through the day tomorrow, you’re in luck. In this article, I’ll tell you everything I do to feel good after a night of no rest.

Eat a Good Breakfast

And really, you should be choosing good food options throughout the day. Stay away from empty calorie snacks, fast food, processed foods (ingredient labels you don’t understand) or saturated fats.

You should probably avoid those foods every day, but it’s especially important if you’re sleepy. Those foods make you feel groggy on a good day, so a bad day is, well, bad.

Drink a Little Coffee

I kind of go back and forth on this one. Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE COFFEE. I love the way it smells, the way it tastes and how it (initially) makes me feel.

If you read my review on a Teatox I recently tried, then you know that I actually sleep better when I don’t drink it on the reg.

But this isn’t just a regular day. This is a day I missed out on precious sleep.

Make sure that you:

  • Don’t overdo it. You’ll just feel jittery and uncomfortable.
  • Sip on it. Don’t chug it all at once. I know you want to but don’t. This will help to avoid a major crash later on.

Drink a Lot of Water

Your body uses water more when you’re awake versus when you sleep. Since you were awake all or most of the night, you’ll need a little extra H2O to combat this. Not only that but your adrenals rely on water to work properly – and those are what affect stress levels.

I don’t know about you, but if I get hydrated on a normal day I’m cranky. So drink up!

And while you’re at it, add electrolytes. Being properly hydrated is more than just water intake. You can sprinkle some pink Himalayan salt in your morning glass, but to me, that sounds disgusting. Most sports drinks are sugar filled B.S. drinks that will only make you feel worse.

I trust, use, and highly recommend this packet of all natural electrolytes. You can buy the full canister with 40 servings, but it’s always good to get some samples and test it out to make sure you like the flavor. To me, they taste like lemonade! I’m obsessed. I not only drink them when I’ve missed sleep but regularly to keep from getting lightheaded. Give em a try!

Move Your Body

Typically, you should always move your body first thing when you wake up. Do you need to do an entire hour-long workout? Of course not.

You can take a walk outside, do yoga or do some stretches. This allows your body to wake up and shift to being awake.

In my opinion, I wouldn’t do any kind of workout that will put too much stress on your body. If you are in the habit of working out, take a day off. Exhausting yourself will likely make you feel worse.

Avoid Napping

I’m sorry. I really am. I live for naps, and usually, I recommend them. However, in this case, it won’t help. You’re only going to wake up feeling groggy and terrible and your circadian rhythm will be thrown off.

Instead, whenever I have a sleepless night I do my best to wait until an hour or two before my usual bedtime.
