Seasonal depression, SAD, seasonal affective disorder – whatever you want to call it, it’s hard not to feel a little down during the fall and winter months. It gets too cold to enjoy being outside for long periods of time, it gets darker earlier, and the days are shorter. It becomes harder to find motivation and actually get to where you want to be. Choose a book to motivate you and let’s do this!
1. Start.: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average, and Do Work That Matters
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I get so overwhelmed with all of the ideas I have that I don’t know where to start, so I don’t. I know other people have an incredible goal in mind, but don’t know where to start. No matter which person you are – this is a book to motivate you to get going.
Quote from the book to motivate you now: “There are only two paths in life: average and awesome. The average path is easy because all you have to do is nothing. The awesome path is more challenging because things like fear only bother you when you do work that matters. The good news is Start gives readers practical, honest, actionable insights to be more awesome, more often.” – Jon Acuff
2. You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life
Okay, I’m not gonna lie – I’ve listened to this book on Audible like 8 times. It’s that good. Each time I listen, I hear it differently. Jen Sincero has such an amazing way of making learning about your own psychology so interesting. If you’re new to personal development and the thought of it makes you yawn, this is a great starting place.
Quote from the book to motivate you now: “You are perfect. To think anything less is as pointless as a river thinking that it’s got too many curves or that it moves too slowly or that its rapids are too rapid. Says who? You’re on a journey with no defined beginning, middle, or end. There are no wrong twists and turns. There is just being. And your job is to be as you as you can be. This is why you’re here. To shy away from who you truly are would leave the world you-less. You are the only you there is and ever will be. I repeat, you are the only you there is and ever will be. Do not deny the world its one and only chance to bask in your brilliance.” – Jen Sincero
3. You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth
I really didn’t think I could love Jen Sincero more, then she came out with this. This is the book I listened to every day before eventually quitting my day job. She really helps you to shift your mind and discover what your “thing” is and how to make money doing it. It’s a must-read.
Quote from the book to motivate you now: “We tend to hold on to resentment because we feel like the nitwit who wronged us doesn’t deserve forgiveness. Meanwhile, the only person being punished by your resentment is you. Forgiveness is about you deserving peace, not necessarily about others deserving your forgiveness. You are allowing nasty thoughts of nasty things to take up precious space in your mind. If you love yourself, you’ll end your own torture and let it go.” – Jen Sincero
4. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life
This is another book that is repeatedly listened to on Audible. It’s not so much about not giving a fuck at all, but only caring about things that truly matter. Shifting your focus, living in line with your values, and creating more peace in your life. If you can handle a little language, then this should also be at the top of your list.
Quote from the book to motivate you now: “Everything worthwhile in life is won through surmounting the associated negative experience. Any attempt to escape the negative, to avoid it or quash it or silence it, only backfires. The avoidance of suffering is a form of suffering. The avoidance of struggle is a struggle. The denial of failure is a failure. Hiding what is shameful is itself a form of shame. Pain is an inextricable thread in the fabric of life, and to tear it out is not only impossible but destructive: attempting to tear it out unravels everything else with it. To try to avoid pain is to give too many fucks about pain. In contrast, if you’re able to not give a fuck about the pain, you become unstoppable.” -Mark Manson
5. Girl Code: Unlocking the Secrets to Success, Sanity, and Happiness for the Female Entrepreneur
Girl Code is great because it’s like sitting in a room listening to successful women give their best secrets for success. Cara has a way of talking that just brings peace to your soul. You feel like an empowered badass after listening to any of her books.
Quote from the book to motivate you now: “We each have a unique path to walk in this life, and there is a reason that yours is unfolding the way that it is. Embrace your journey and look for the lessons. Believe in divine timing and know that what’s for you will not pass you.” – Cara Alwill Leyba
6. GIRLBOSS
If you get inspired by other women who are out there crushing it at life, then this book will give you all the vibes to get you going. She wasn’t looking for success when she found it, she just followed her heart and learned along the way. It’s a great reminder that you may not know all of the steps you’ll need to take, but as long as you put one foot in front of the other, you’ll get to where you’re going.
Quote from the book to motivate you now: “Abandon anything about your life and habits that might be holding you back. Learn to create your own opportunities. Know that there is no finish line; fortune favors action. Race balls-out toward the extraordinary life that you’ve always dreamed of, or still haven’t had time to dream up. And prepare to have a hell of a lot of fun along the way.”
– Sophia Amoruso
7. The Compound Effect
This is the first book I ever read in the personal development/motivational realm. It is probably one of the most life-changing things I’ve read. When we think about success, we think of the grande picture. We think of all the things we need to get done. We feel like if we don’t hustle, hustle hustle, we’ll never get there. This book proves otherwise.
Quote from the book to motivate you now: “It’s not the big things that add up in the end; it’s the hundreds, thousands, or millions of little things that separate the ordinary from the extraordinary.”
– Darren Hardy
8. The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success and Happiness
If you have trouble with self-discipline, then this book is going to be a game-changer for you. As someone who procrastinates from time to time, this book always gets my head back where it needs to be.
Quote from the book to motivate you now: “The truth is, what you do matters. What you do today matters. What you do every day matters. Successful people just do the things that seem to make no difference in the act of doing them and they do them over and over and over until the compound effect kicks in.”
– Jeff Olson
Don’t have time to read but want to better your mindset?
We’re all busy, and life is crazy. This is why I’m obsessed with audiobooks. I listen to them in the shower, while I’m sipping my coffee in the morning, and in the car. It’s a great way to get the good vibes in without having to dedicate a bunch of time to physically reading a book.
If you want to get started, you can listen to Audible for free. If you don’t like the book or don’t like the narrator, you can talk to support and they’ll return it for you so you can try something else.
