This morning I woke up feeling kind of “blah”. I know it is because I have a lot on my plate right now, and the thought of getting everything done was extremely overwhelming. No matter what that big goal in your life is right now, it’s so normal to get into a rut. It has taken some experimenting, but I finally have a go-to routine for when I feel overwhelmed, drained, or in a rut.
Exercise
I used to roll my eyes so far into the back of my head when I heard someone recommend this. How is adding something else to my plate going to help? Well, it gets the endorphins flowin’. You’ve seen Legally Blonde, right? Endorphins make you happy! Moving my body is the first thing I do when I wake up feeling like I could just live the rest of my life in bed. It instantly makes me feel powerful and energetic!
Clean Your Space
I don’t know about you, but when my space is cluttered my brain feels cluttered. As soon as I clean my space, I instantly feel like I can relax. Sometimes, I have to put decluttering first on my list before I tackle anything else. It’s truly amazing what you can get done in a short amount of time if you are focused. Clean the room of your house you spend the most time in, and you will feel better.
Prioritize
If you’re like me, everything you need to do is a top priority. This can be an extremely exhausting way to go about life. If I don’t make sure to set my priorities every single day, I can easily find myself stressed out, overwhelmed, and back in a rut. What things have to be done today? And what things could wait until tomorrow or the next day? Focus not only on responsibilities but on the things that will make you feel happier.
Chunk Your Time
You’ve probably heard this advice before, but I’m going to tell you again. Have you ever had so much to do that when the time comes to do it, you don’t even know where to start? Take your priorities, and break them up into small increments. I spend 30 minutes doing work, 30 minutes cleaning, and then 30 minutes reading, writing or watching TV. Getting into this flow helps me to not only stay on track but prevents me from getting bored.
Get Some Fresh Air
Sometimes all I need is a long walk with my dog to feel revitalized. Something about breathing fresh air, having open space around me, and feeling the sun on my skin makes me feel alive! Put on leggings and a cute sports bra, go outside, and spend some time in nature. The leggings are optional, but I always feel good in a nice pair of black leggings. You wear whatever makes you feel fierce.
You Aren’t Perfect
The most important thing to remember is that you aren’t perfect. Your worth is not defined by what you accomplish. We all have days where we just need to let our minds chill out. If you don’t have anything pressing that absolutely has to be done immediately, give yourself a break. Remember that life will still go on, and you are never as behind as it seems.
Keep Moving Forward
I have this tattooed on the back of my knees as a reminder. (I wish I could see it better) As imperfect humans, it can be easy to be hard on ourselves. Feeling drained is normal. Getting stuck in a rut is normal. As long as you stay in that place for too long, you will be perfectly fine! If you need a day, take it. But then jump back in! Action creates motivation and will help you slowly get back out of your rut.
